A better deal for migrant workers

19 November 2008

‘According to a Federal Government commissioned review of the temporary skilled overseas workers scheme, Australian employers should be forced to pay migrant workers market rates and a levy to cover their Medicare and insurance costs’. (Cave, AM, 2008)

Industrial Relations Commissioner Barbara Deegan also urges greater scrutiny of migration agents and a ban on employers deducting payments from visa holders to pay agents. (AM, ABC radio, 2008)

Market rates and wage protection for migrant workers will see a fall in exploitation, especially in the trades and services field, meaning that Australian workers, wages and conditions are better protected.

This is an issue that both industry and unions need to respond to.
